What is Peer Support?

Peer Support is a service for adults with serious mental illness provided by a person who has personal experience with mental illness and is committed to Recovery. Peers have a unique ability to gain the trust and respect of other consumers based on shared experiences. The mentoring provided by a Peer Support Specialist helps to increase skills and gain confidence.

Who are Peer Supports?

A Peer Support Specialist is an employee of Hegira Programs, Inc. whose qualifications includes having lived with mental health challenges and being an advocate for others who strive for Recovery.

All HPI Peer Support Specialists participate in specific training for the Peer Support position and are either certified by the State of Michigan or are working toward certification.

Peer Support is a growing movement in Community Mental Health. The State of Michigan has a growing professional workforce of over 500 certified Peer Support Specialists.

A Peer Support Specialists can help you:

  • If you are in crisis
  • Work through difficult feelings and thoughts
  • Deal with personal issues such as food, hygiene, recreation
  • Find Community Resources
  • Find ways to socialize
  • Find a job
  • Research housing options
  • Explore ways to take better care of your overall health
  • Identify your support system
  • Learn about mental health recovery

A Peer Support Specialist can offer support, guidance and share personal experience to help you reach the goals you set with your Treatment Team.


Who Can Receive Peer Support Services?

Peer support is an evidence-based model of care available to individuals who:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have a serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorder
  • Agree fully that Peer Support Services will help with the Recovery process
How to Access Peer Support Services

You can request Peer Support Services at your Treatment Plan meeting or by talking to your doctor, therapist, case manager, ACT advocate or unit leader. You can decide with which treatment goals you would like Peer Support Specialist assistance.
